The effect of anti-hail nets on fruit protection, radiation, temperature, quality and profi tability of ‘Mondial Gala’ apples

چکیده
The effects of crystal (transparent) and black nets on the protection of fruits from hail, the interception of light, temperature, humidity and fruit quality were evaluated over four seasons (from 2000 to 2003) at the IRTA-Experimental Station, Lleida (NE-Spain) on ‘Mondial Gala’ apples (Malus x domestica Borkh.). Nets demonstrated their effi ciency for fruit protection against hail; decreased maximum orchard temperatures and increased minimum temperatures and relative humidity. Based on PAR values, on sunny days, the black net intercepted 25% more incident radiation than the control and the crystal net intercepted 12% more. The use of black net resulted in a signifi cant reduction of colour intensity and days taken for maturity, and provided lower average yields for fruit harvested at the fi rst picking. The crystal net was associated with intermediate values between black net and control, or similar values to those of the control. Both nets reduced fruit temperature and the incidence of sunburn improving global skin quality. The black net increased the vigour of the trees. Fruit fi rmness was not affected by the use of nets. Soluble solid content decreased when black net was used, while maturity was delayed in some seasons. There were no consistent effect with respect to titratable acidity and fruit cracking. The annual cost of the anti-hail nets was 1874 to 1612 € ha-1, respectively, for crystal and black nets, depending mainly on the durability of the net. The annual cost of insurance was 760 € ha-1 and was determinated by site, cultivar, yield and price insured, and was lower than that of covering by nets. The gross profi t corresponding to the crystal net (8896 € ha-1) was lower to the control/insurance (9223 € ha-1) and greater to the black net (7842 € ha-1) because of the reduction in fruit colour. With ‘Mondial Gala’ apples, the use of both colour nets was not economically benefi cial compared to the control.

Respiratory quotient : innovative method for monitoring ‘ Royal Gala ’ apple storage in
Apples (Malus domestica, Borkh.) which are not stored at low temperature or in a properly controlled atmosphere (CA) may have a high metabolic rate during the postharvest stage resulting in losses in quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of ‘Royal Gala’ apple fruit stored in accordance with a new method of dynamic controlled atmosphere (DCA).The respiratory quotient (RQ) wa...

The effect of negative air ions on the reduction of Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 inoculated onto mung bean sprout seed and whole or fresh-cut apple fruit was studied. Mung bean seeds, whole Gala apples, and Gala apple slices were inoculated with E. coli ATCC 25922 before being exposed to negative air ions for up to 18 h at room temperature (-23 degrees C). Results revealed a less than 0.5-log re...

Effects of 1-aminoethoxyvinylglycine hydrochloride (AVG or Aviglycine HCl or ReTain) and α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) on fruit retention, fruit quality, eveloved ethylene, and respiration in ‘Rome Beauty’ and three ‘Delicious’ apple cultivars (Malus domestica Borkh.) were studied. The experimental trees were treated with either AVG, applied at 120 g a.i. per 935 L. ha-1 or NAA, applied at t...

Gala' apples trees were treated with kaolin (Surround) in mid-July, and fruit were sampled 1 and 7 days after treatment. Apples were gently rinsed with cold deionized water to remove loose surface material. Small sections of cuticle tissue were shaved from the fruit surface with a razor blade and flash frozen on an aluminum block held at -190oC with liquid N2. The tissue was freeze-dried, coate...
متن کاملCombining yeasts or a bacterial biocontrol agent and heat treatment to reduce postharvest decay of ‘Gala’ apples
‘Gala’ apples were treated after harvest with heat (38°C for 4 days), and then wound-inoculated with the pathogen Penicillium expansum and the antagonist Pseudomanas syringae, or one of two yeast antagonists, to reduce postharvest decay. After storage for 7 days at 20°C or 3 months at 1°C, the least decay was found on fruit where wounds had been allowed to cure by heat treatment (38°C) or cold ...
